Guys Say Tough It

I was chatting with a coworker today, and a discussion of differences in parental  involvement between genders came up.  It was mentioned that females tend to be more involved and engaged with their children, while males tend to be critical, often pushing their kids to tough it out.  What experiences have you had as a child and/or as a parent?
